The band devotes itself to down to earth, tongue-in-cheek ways of expression, using grassroot, street-smart languages to explore pressing topics in everyday Chinese life. The Slap’s lyrics are humorous and inquisitive, simple and straightforward, highly verbal with deep connotations, as if bringing the audience into actual folklore stories. Through their music, The Slap is re-painting a modern version of the famous Chinese scroll painting “Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival,” assembling miniature scenes of contemporary life into unforgettable folk tunes. The Slap’s achievement as a neo-folk rock band has been well established. Their live performance is intricate and wildly exciting, full of stage drama and flair. The like their audience to feel that they are watching a variety show, not just a music performance. The straightforward, down to earth approach is their favorite, as they feel real art lies in the middle of the high and low brow, and is the most “human.”
