In the fall of 1984, the band (already as Papaya Paranoia) won the 28th Yamaha Popcon event, pushing them into the indie limelight. From there they hit the Tokyo club circuit. The band had two tracks included in a 1985 EMI compilation called . In December of the same year, they released their first album, , on Captain Records. Since then they have released sporadically on a number of labels, but are perhaps more famous for their live shows, which feature wild outfits and a high skill level. They are sometimes lazily compared to Pizzicato Five, but they veer far more toward the electro, especially since 1999, when the current lineup was fixed.
