John Sykes

John Sykes is an English musician, songwriter and producer, best known as a member of Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy and Tygers of Pan Tang. He also fronted the hard rock group Blue Murder and has released several solo albums. After returning to England, John joined Streetfighter (1980). In 1981 he played in a band which featured bassist Neil Murray, who had recently left Whitesnake. John joined Tygers of Pan Tang after replying to an ad in the paper, which he left in order to audition for Ozzy Osbourne after Randy Rhoads died. John then joined Phil Lynott both solo and with Thin Lizzy. He rejoined forces with Neil Murray in Whitesnake, 1984, contributing some licks to the American release of Slide It In, an album which had just been recorded and released in the U.K. prior to his joining. His tenure with Whitesnake endured until the recording of Whitesnake's eponymous album (1987), during which he quit the band. He modernized the band's sound tremendously,by bringing in a more metallic sound, riffs and solos that were in the vein of what American hair metal bands played at the time, contributing to make Whitesnake popular in America where they were practically unknown before. He then formed his own band, to feature on the same label as Whitesnake (Geffen Records), named Blue Murder. He originally and successively worked with singers Ray Gillen and Tony Martin, both of which left and joined Black Sabbath on their own time. John ended up handling vocal duties in Blue Murder.
