Em is Emelie Appelgren, a 22 year old Swedish singer. She was born and raised with mom, dad and big sister in the small town of Nora. When Em was 15, she and her sister Sandra decided to move into the city of Örebro together to study music in college. After graduation Em continued her studies at Örebro University with music development as speciality to broaden her skills academically. Today Em is an artist but she is also a certified behavioral scientists. Now music controls her life, and will do it the rest of her life. – “It’s the music I will try to live on, everything that I’ve done before is a” backup “if something drastic happens,” said Em decisively. Music has been a big part of the Em’s life since childhood. She is self-taught on the piano since the age of ten, something her musical grandfather Roy inspired. Grandpa has a long background as an artist and also Em’s mom is an accomplished pianist. Parallely to the music, Em has also danced a lot. She began as a seven year old in ballet and has been nine years in a dance school where she danced show dance and street and gained stage experience. She has also appeared in musicals. Maybe it was written in the stars that Em would become an artist for a collaboration with established songwriters, and contract with her “dream team” came just in time when the studies were completed. In April 2014, Em released the song “Taking Back My Heart” and a record company offered a contract immediately. The debut single was written and produced by Christian Oscarsson and Linda Sonnvik. The songwriters are also known as the house duo Soundstreamers, with hits like “Like It Like That”. Em did a captivating interpretation of the song on the piano. It was when Sonnvik heard the interpretation that she became completely convinced that Em is a big star, a diamond in the rough. Sonnvik has worked as a songwriter, promoter and artist manager for over ten years and has represented, among others, Grammy winner Dilba Demirbag. Linda now works as a motor in the project and is Ems main song writer. A passion for Em is to make her own interpretations of songs unplugged. It really shows a different side of her. – “I like to be versatile and show that I’m not just a studio singer, but also an instrumentalist. It is a musical side of me that I want to show when many often packaged with radio versions and a catchy image, “says Em. – “It’s great that not everything sounds so perfect as in the studio. I think you get a very different relationship to the song, which almost feels rejuvenated when done in an acoustic way.” Best of all, she thrives on the stage, when she finds an audience to enjoy and dance. On stage, she gets to show all sides and vent their exuberant creativity. During spring 2014, she rode around on many gigs and the audience went wild! – “One girl showed her breasts for me during my show once, it was the most flattering,” laughs the singer. “Taking Back My Heart” EP gave Em excellent reviews and a first place in the Swedish iTunes album chart. Now she is recording her dream album in Sweden and Norway. The sound is danceable with an electronic edge, many well known producers are connected. – “I must create my own sound and the songs are amazing! This is so funny and I have been waiting for this all my life.” Her biggest gig to date was recently in Europe’s largest gay festival Europride where Em was the act that closed the festival on the main stage at Pride Park. Despite the rain, the area was full of a dancing crowd. Em has taken the first strides toward the dream of living as an artist. Her tenacity, charisma, amazing singing voice and hit songs are showing the way.
