杰里罗尔莫顿（Jelly Roll Morton）（原名费迪南德约瑟夫莱蒙特），早期爵士乐的巨人，新奥尔良爵士乐的代表人物，拉格泰姆与爵士乐过渡阶段的关键人物。没有他，也许就没有后续的芝加哥爵士乐等爵士乐。身为《海上钢琴师》中与1900斗琴的那个黑人的原型（其实他是白人），他真实的生平要悲惨的多。十岁学琴，流浪南方。酒吧弹琴，早就机会。一曲成名，名扬南方。芝加哥定居，红辣椒乐队组建。连续几年，其曲变成了传世经典。经济大萧条，爵士大萧条。莫顿又一次酒吧弹琴。记者来访，记其正平。死时年纪轻轻，容貌苍老憔悴。其实我所选的这几首歌是最具有代表性的。认真听完每一首，不难发现，莫顿的曲子是多么的好！我们就来细品一下Sidewalk Blues吧，这首歌是莫顿和他的红辣椒乐队（Red Hot Peppers）于1926年9月21日录制于芝加哥的典型之作。前奏以对话的方式，口哨与汽车喇叭声（具象音乐）为我们生动形象地盈造出人行道当中的场景，循序渐进地带入主题。序曲不是一下子所有乐曲都出场，而是轮流出场，每个乐器都是2小节，分别是钢琴、长号、短号、单簧管，最后乐队齐奏，回到降b调上。然后，是12个小节的A主题，以短号演奏节奏欢快的布鲁斯旋律，但丝毫不跑主题，又加之以创意的断拍法，使乐曲更俏皮。接着是12个小节的B主题，乐队齐奏，演奏另一种布鲁斯的旋律，使乐曲逐渐升入高潮。而后又是12个小节的A主题，以单簧管演奏，与前面的A主题正好“衬托”。接下来是一个4小节的间奏，运用叠音的方法，使乐曲过渡到C主题。然后就是两个32小节的C主题了。由三个弹簧管乐手即兴演奏，大部分是C调的同一个音——Do，配加欢快活泼的钢琴，主题鲜明，既有即兴，又有对位旋律。钢琴与弹簧管的配合堪称完美。最后是一个6小节的尾声，与序曲形成“对比”，乐队齐奏。结尾又是口哨声和对话，首尾呼应，环环相扣，本末倒置，整首曲子便结束了。你可以感受到杰里罗尔莫顿精湛的技艺和精巧的炼句，这几首曲子都是这样，尤其是他的代表作The Crave。普通听众可能会认为这只是一个平庸、简单的乐曲，但杰里罗尔莫顿的即兴和布鲁斯的旋律控制的极好。这显然说明他的自大是可以理解的。比如，声称在1902年发明爵士乐，镶钻的牙、华丽的服装、满手的戒指、以及在黑帮组织中的人脉。但他的确是一个极出色的爵士乐乐曲家。
