亨德尔浩瀚的作品中最有价值的是歌剧与清唱剧，《绿树成荫》选自歌剧《赛尔斯》赛尔斯是波斯国王，他背弃自己的未婚妻，爱上自己兄弟的恋人，于是千方百计拆散他们。最后阴谋暴露，有情人终成眷属。赛尔斯虽然行为丑恶，亨德尔仍给予他优美的唱段，赛尔斯看到庭院中绿树成荫，不由地用歌声表达出了赞叹。
