Arnold Schoenberg
[00:46.26]
[00:46.41]I cannot remember everything.
[00:50.11]I must have been unconscious most of the time.
[00:58.26]I remember only the grandiose moment
[01:03.18]when they all started to sing, as if prearranged,
[01:10.17]the old prayer they had neglected for so many years
[01:18.15]--the forgotten creed!
[01:29.33]But I have no recollection how I got underground
[01:33.63]to live in the sewers of Warsaw for so long a time.
[01:42.85]The day began as usual:
[01:45.41]Reveille when it still was dark.
[01:49.62]"Get out!"
[01:50.81]Whether you slept or whether worries kept you awake the whole night.
[01:55.26]You had been separated from your children,
[01:58.60]from your wife, from your parents.
[02:00.73]You don't know what happened to them...
[02:02.63]How could you sleep?
[02:15.78]The trumpets again
[02:17.96]-- "Get out! The sergeant will be furious!" ──“
快出去!要不然军士会大发雷霆!” [02:23.25]They came out;
他们出来了; [02:25.13]some very slowly, the old ones, the sick ones;
[02:29.78]some with nervous agility.
[02:32.21]They fear the sergeant.
[02:34.20]They hurry as much as they can.
[02:37.80]In vain!
[02:41.50]Much too much noise, much too much commotion!
[02:45.84]And not fast enough!
[02:47.49]The Feldwebel shouts:
Achtung! Stillgestanden! Na wird's mal!
[02:51.29]Oder soll ich mit dem Jewehrkolben nachhelfen?
[02:54.69]Na jut; wenn ihrs durchaus haben wollt!"
[02:59.31]The sergeant and his subordinates hit everyone:
[03:01.99]young or old, strong or sick, quiet, guilty or innocent ...
[03:08.92]It was painful to hear them groaning and moaning.
[03:20.73]I heard it though I had been hit very hard,
[03:25.11]so hard that I could not help falling down.
[03:34.49]We all on the ground
[03:35.80]who could not stand up were then beaten over the head...
[03:58.65]I must have been unconscious.
[04:01.80]The next thing I heard was a soldier saying:
[04:04.89]"They are all dead!" “
[04:09.74]Whereupon the sergeant ordered to do away with us.
[04:15.00]There I lay aside half conscious.
[04:23.30]It had become very still
[04:28.65]--fear and pain. ──
[04:34.73]Then I heard the sergeant shouting: "Abzählen!
[04:41.31]They start slowly and irregularly: one, two, three, four...
[04:51.61]-- "Achtung!" The sergeant shouted again,
Rascher! Nochmals von vorn anfange!
[05:04.18]In einer Minute will ich wissen,
[05:05.57]wieviele ich zur Gaskammer abliefere! Abzählen!"
[05:14.67]They began again, first slowly:
[05:19.56]one, two, three, four,
[05:23.23]became faster and faster,
[05:26.31]so fast that it finally sounded like a stampede of wild horses,
[05:34.17]and all of a sudden, in the middle of it,
[05:37.67]they began singing the /Shema Yisroel/.
05:40.67]Sh'ma Yisraeil, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad.
[05:57.40]V'ahavta eit Adonai Elohecha b'chawl l'vav'cha uv'chawl nafsh'cha,
[06:09.35]uv'chawl m'odecha.
[06:18.54]V'hayu had'varim haeileh,
[06:21.77]asher anochi m'tsav'cha hayom, al l'vavecha.
[06:30.89]V'shinantam l'vanecha, v'dibarta bam b'shivt'cha b'veitecha,
[06:36.98]uvlecht'cha vaderech, uv'shawchb'cha uvkumecha.
[06:42.29]Ukshartam l'ot al yadecha, v'hayu l'totafot bein einecha.
