"Foggy Dew" is the name of several Irish ballads, and an Irish lament. The song chronicles the Easter Uprising of 1916, and encourages Irishmen to fight for the cause of Ireland, rather than for the British Empire, as so many young men're doing in World War l. The earliest version of the Foggy Dew is a broadside in the Bodleian Library, dated 1886. The song is discussed in the "Journal of the Irish folk Song Society" in 1905 and 1911. The Moorlough Shore is a traditional Irish love song. The air is also known by various other titles and lyrics, such as "The Maid of Mourne Shore", "Moorlough Mary", "Banks of the Moorlough Shore", "The Maids Of The Mountain Shore", "The Foggy Dew", "Down by the Salley Gardens", "Gort Na Saileán" and similar.
