创作历史可追溯至2002年,当时乐队在规划第五张专辑的早期版本,并持续在官网分享录音室草稿。《This Is Such a Pity》源自同一目录中的《She Who Is Militant》,两者只保留了相近的和弦走向,旋律、结构与编曲在2002–2004年间经历多轮重写,在专辑制作前期被列入Cuomo的“A-List”候选曲目。进入正式录制后,这首歌成为乐队在Grandmaster Studios尝试制作的第一首作品,鼓轨多次重录,几度濒临被放弃,但在最终成型后成为成员普遍认可的亮点。 制作方面的关键在于乐队刻意选择廉价的Casio键盘作为全部键盘声源。尽管团队曾尝试以Moog等昂贵设备重现音色,但始终认为Casio的原始质感与歌曲的结构更契合,也使得整首歌呈现一种简洁、冷静、带新波色彩的音色特征。 歌曲中没有失真吉他,强调干净的吉他声部与合成器质地的键盘层次,形成与专辑多首偏硬摇滚曲目截然不同的气氛。Brian Bell创作了对位式的双吉他solo,但录音室中大部分吉他由Cuomo与Bobby Schneck完成,Bell反而成为“作曲者而非演奏者”。这种编曲选择进一步强化歌曲整体的平稳动态与细腻纹理。 发行过程中出现多版本混音。首批专辑版本的混响较少,并保留结尾的鼓填充;随后因电台释出而重新混音,出现一次强调错误,导致末段副歌中“that”一词的重音缺失;最终修正的 Radio Mix 加回原始声部,并提高人声混响。此版本于2006年3月后成为后续所有再版中的默认版本。 在2006年3月作为宣传单曲推出,是专辑第四首对外释出的作品。它在电台表现不如前三支正式单曲,未进入榜单前十,也没有拍摄MV或发行实体单曲,但在乐队内部受到高度重视。Cuomo多次强调这是他在整张专辑中最喜欢的歌曲;Brian Bell、Scott Shriner 与Patrick Wilson也都在访谈与专辑评论音轨中给予正面评价。The Strokes主唱Julian Casablancas亦称其为自己最喜欢的Weezer歌曲。
