1970年4月1日尼克松宣布出兵柬埔寨。5月1日肯特州立大学3000名学生在校园举行反战集会。次日国民警卫队开进县城进驻肯特大学，州长在电视上发表声明禁止任何抗议活动并颁布禁令。5月4日，学生与警卫队发生冲突，十几名士兵在没有任何警告的情况下突然单腿跪地用M-1冲锋枪持续射击三十秒，当场打死四人
“我拿起我的吉他，一挥而就写下了《俄亥俄》。第二天，我们走进洛杉矶的一间录音棚，把它录了下来。之后不到一周，所有的电台都放起了这首歌。对那个时代来讲，真的太快了、太快了。没有审查。DJ门想放什么就放什么。批评政府不会有麻烦。……直到今天，美国政府仍然没有向四位受难者的家属道歉。”
