[00:00.96]Good morning. [00:02.58]Today's lecture is the very first of a series of lectures on art history. [00:08.27]So I'd like to spend some time discussing with you the following topic: [00:12.56]Why do we need to study art history [00:15.48]and what can we learn from it? [00:18.47]First of all, I'd say, if you study art history, [00:22.79]this might be a good way to learn more about a culture [00:25.57]than is possible to learn in general history classes. [00:29.59]You know, most typical history courses [00:33.19]concentrate on politics, economics and war. [00:37.15]But art history focuses on much more than this, [00:41.32]because art reflects not only the political values of a people, [00:45.11]but also their religious beliefs, emotions etc. [00:49.88]In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors can be provided by art, [00:56.37]like what people did for a living, [00:58.51]what kind of dress they wore, [01:00.32]what ceremonies they held etc.
