水晶宫毁誉一场火灾，是管理人员不慎在抽烟时点燃了宫殿，仅剩两塔（南塔，北塔），则在二战时被自己人拆除，原因是这两座塔很有可能成为德军进攻伦敦的路标，北塔直接被炸毁，南塔则因为附近有民居，被一砖一瓦拆除。后来在二战后，英国人在原址前建造了水晶宫国家体育中心，以示纪念。
1851第一届伦敦世博会，中国第一次参加，是个人行为，广东人徐荣村将自己的“荣记湖丝”装成12捆展出，获金、银大奖。当时中国是咸丰元年，爆发太平天国内乱。
那时候清政府也被邀请去参观世界博览会了，只不过参观者把这次展览翻译成了“炫奇会”。
