1955年西格被审判期间，写出了他最有名的一首歌。当时他正在读《静静的顿河》，书中摘录了一首乌克兰民歌，西格在那首歌的基础上写下三段歌词，并谱了曲。后来与《答案在风中飘》，在1960年代成为美国反战运动的两首圣歌。
