[00:02.60]Chapter 6
[00:05.65]They found Peter Hobbs under his car—an old green car. He got up slowly.
[00:16.78]He wore old blue trousers and a dirty orange shirt.
[00:22.50]'We want to talk about Mrs Clarkson,' Inspector Walsh said.
[00:29.70]'Oh, it's about her,' Peter said. He looked at the Inspector.
[00:38.93]'I know she's dead. Someone in the village told me.'
[00:45.25]'Why did you go to the Clarkson's house last night?'
[00:51.44]'Jackie wanted me to come and see her brother, Roger.'
[00:57.44]“You're angry,” she said. “Come and tell Roger.”
[01:02.59]I went to the house but nobody opened the door.
[01:08.91]So I made a lot of noise and then they opened the door.
[01:15.34]Old Mrs Clarkson wasn't there. But I told Roger. I told them all!'
[01:24.83]Peter hit the car with his hand. 'I wanted to kill that woman.
[01:32.75]I lost my job, my first job, because of her.
[01:39.83]Last month I was in trouble with the police and
[01:45.81]that old woman wrote to my office and she told them about the police.
[01:54.84]I wanted to kill her!' 'Take it easy!' Inspector Walsh said. 'What happened next?'
[02:05.97]'Jackie gave me some coffee, but her brother didn't listen to me,' Peter said angrily.
[02:16.33]'Then Tom Briggs came in. He wanted to talk to Roger, too.
[02:24.38]But Roger didn't listen to him. Jackie was very unhappy—she nearly cried.
[02:33.43]Then I went home. That's all.' 'I see. Now tell me about the tablets.
[02:46.56]You went to the village on Thursday?' 'Tablets? Oh, yes. I remember.
[02:57.05]Jackie wanted me to get her mother's tablets from the village.
[03:03.20]I go to the village on my bicycle—this car doesn't work.'
[03:10.64]'Thank you, Peter. That's all.' 'That's all?' Peter laughed angrily.
[03:18.72]'You're going to come back, I know that! I know the police!'
[03:26.91]Tom Briggs' farm was about half a mile away, near the river.
[03:36.48]It was not a big farm, and the house was old and dirty.
[03:43.04]'Not much money here,' Inspector Walsh said.
[03:47.99]Tom Briggs was a young man, about thirty years old, with dirty hands and bad teeth.
[03:58.34]'What's wrong? Excuse me, I'm eating my dinner,' he said.
[04:05.41]'We can wait. Finish your dinner,' Inspector Walsh said.
[04:11.75]'We want to ask one or two questions about last night.'
[04:18.27]'Come and wait in the front room,' Tom said and opened the door.
[04:27.34]Inspector Walsh looked at the things in the front room.
[04:31.77]There was an old black and white television, and some books on the table.
[04:40.16]There was a picture of a happy young girl with long brown hair on the table, too.
[04:48.22]Inspector Walsh looked at the picture for a long time.
[04:55.29]Who was the girl? Tom Briggs came back into the front room.
[05:02.53]'Finished?' Inspector Walsh asked. 'You know Mrs Clarkson is dead?'
[05:12.62]Tom Briggs sat down suddenly on the nearest chair.
[05:18.16]'What? How did she die? When did it happen? I was there last night.'
[05:29.28]'She died last night or early this morning. What did you do last night?'
[05:39.08]'Me? Why are you asking me? I went there to meet Mr Clarkson Roger.
[05:48.84]I'm losing money on this farm and I need more land.
[05:54.79]I want half Mrs Clarkson's garden.' 'You went into the kitchen.
[06:01.95]What did you do next? Can you remember?'
[06:07.63]Tom Briggs looked at Sergeant Foster and then back at Inspector Walsh.
[06:15.67]'I remember it very well. All the family were in the kitchen.
[06:23.14]Peter Hobbs was there, too. I talked to Roger. He wants his mother to sell the house.
[06:35.74]But he wants the land. He doesn't want me to have it. But now Mrs Clarkson is dead.
[06:46.21]What's going to happen now?'
[06:50.98]Inspector Walsh got up and took the picture of the girl from the table.
[06:58.79]'Who's this?' Tom's face went red. 'Who? Oh! That's a friend.
[07:09.90]It's not…It was a long time ago.'
[07:16.28]The two detectives walked back to the Clarksons' house through the garden.
[07:24.18]It was beautiful, green and quiet. Inspector Walsh felt tired and hungry.
[07:34.13]Who killed Molly? He knew the answer now,
[07:39.05]but he needed to ask one or two more questions.'Let's go, Sergeant,' he said,
[07:48.98]and put on his hat again. 'Tomorrow is a new day.'
