[00:03.69]Chapter 6
[00:06.82]Three days later,
[00:08.20]in the big,new cemetery two miles from their house,
[00:11.77]the two old people said goodbye to their dead son.
[00:15.94]Then they went back to their dark, old house.
[00:20.31]They did not want to live without Herbert,
[00:23.40]but they waited for something good to happen,
[00:25.91]something to help them.
[00:28.31]The days went by very slowly.
[00:31.51]Sometimes they did not talk
[00:33.72]because there was nothing to say without Herbert.
[00:36.77]And so the days felt very long.
[00:39.83]Then,one night,about a week later,
[00:44.37]Mrs White got out of bed because she could not sleep.
[00:48.65]She sat by the window and she watched and waited for her son.
[00:53.57]He did not come and she began to cry quietly.
[00:58.04]In the dark her husband heard her and he called,
[01:01.81]'Come back to bed. It's cold out there.'
[01:06.77]'It's colder for my son,'his wife answered.
[01:11.15]'He's out there in the cold cemetery.'
[01:14.81]Mrs White did not go back to bed,
[01:18.22]but Mr White was old and tired and the bed was warm.
[01:22.96]So, in the end, he went to sleep again.
[01:26.77]Suddenly he heard a cry from his wife.
[01:29.86]'The paw!' she cried.'The monkey's paw!'
[01:34.68]She came back to the bed and stood there.
[01:38.14]'What is it ? What's the matter?'Mr White cried.
[01:43.11]He sat up in bed.
[01:45.14]'What's the matter? 'he thought.
[01:48.12]'Why is she excited?
[01:50.24]What's she talking about?'
[01:52.41]He looked at his wife.
[01:54.35]Her face was very white in the dark.
[01:57.96]'I want it,'she said quietly,
[02:01.30]'and you've got it! Give it to me! Please!'
[02:06.24]'What?' Mr White asked.
[02:09.25]'The monkey's paw,
[02:11.33]Mrs White said.'Where is it?'
[02:14.35]'It's downstairs, Mr White answered.'Why?'
[02:19.86]Mrs White began to laugh and cry.
[02:23.47]'We can have two more wishes! '
[02:25.77]she cried. 'We had one-but there are two more!'
[02:30.74]'Oh,no!Not again!
[02:33.47]Think, woman!' Mr White cried.
[02:37.03]But Mrs White did not listen.
[02:39.65]'Quickly,' she said .
[02:41.70]'Go and get the paw.
[02:43.95]We're going to wish for our boy to come back to us!'
[02:47.69]'No!' Mr White cried.'You're mad!'
[02:52.20]'Get it! Get it quickly!' Mrs White cried again.
[02:57.58]Mr White said again,
[02:59.37]'Think, woman! Think!
[03:02.21]Our boy was in the machinery for a long time.
[03:06.55]They didn't want to show him to us!
[03:09.29]Think!Do you want to see his body?'
[03:13.37]'Yes! He's my son.
[03:16.41]I'm not afraid of him!' she answered.
[03:19.80]'You don't understand,'
[03:22.99]Mr White said sadly,
[03:25.04]but he went downstairs to look for the monkey's paw.
[03:29.12]In the living-room it was dark and Mr White did not have a candle.
[03:35.15]Slowly, he went across the room
[03:37.40]and he put out his hand for the monkey's paw.
[03:41.21]He touched it, and quickly took his hand away again.
[03:44.87]'No!' he thought.'I can't!
[03:49.34]I don't want to see Herbert!
[03:51.93]His face-after he was in the machinery… no!'
[03:57.68]Then he thought about his wife-
[04:00.15]and he put out his hand and took the paw.
[04:03.38]In the bedroom his wife waited.
[04:06.98]She saw the paw in Mr White's hand and cried,
[04:10.46]'Quick! Make the wish!'
[04:13.87]'I can't,'Mr White answered.
[04:17.22]'Remember-he died in the machinery!'
[04:21.64]'Make the wish!
[04:23.49]I'm not afraid of my own son!'Mrs White cried again.
[04:29.52]Mr White looked sadly at his wife,
[04:32.41]but he took the paw in his right hand and said slowly,
[04:36.52]'I wish for my son, Herbert, to come back to us.'
[04:43.18]then he sat down in the nearest chair.
[04:46.53]But Mrs White went over to the window and looked out into the road.
[04:51.79]She stayed there for a long time and she did not move.
[04:56.33]Nothing happened.
[04:58.29]The monkey's paw could not do it!
[05:01.12]'Thank God!'Mr White said, and he went back to bed.
[05:07.35]Soon Mrs White went to bed too.
