[00:06.68]Chapter 5 A Long Cold Winter
[00:12.40]It was dark for four months.
[00:16.00]Outside the wooden house at Framheim,
[00:20.01]it was often -60°Centigrade.
[00:25.75]The dogs lived in warm holes under the snow.
[00:30.90]The men stayed in the house,
[00:33.56]and worked in their rooms under the snow.
[00:39.05]The skis and sledges came from the best shops in Norway,
[00:44.51]but Bjaaland wasn't happy with them.
[00:48.25]He changed a lot of things on the skis and sledges.
[00:53.58]Soon the sledges were stronger than before.
[00:57.95]The skis were better and faster, too.
[01:02.45]All the Norwegians worked hard.
[01:07.54]They looked after their dogs,
[01:09.72]and worked on their equipment-the sledges,skis,tents.
[01:16.71]Every day they thought about their journey to the Pole,
[01:21.09]and talked about it.
[01:23.62]And every day,Amundsen thought about Scott.
[01:29.39]One day,in midwinter,
[01:32.12]he talked to his men.
[01:35.48]'Let's start early,before Scott,'
[01:39.28]Amundsen said.'Remember,Scott has more men than us,
[01:45.19]and he has motor sledges,too.
[01:48.63]Perhaps they can go faster than us.'
[01:52.39]Bjaaland laughed.'Oh no,
[01:55.76]they can't go faster than me,'
[01:58.00]he said.'On snow,
[02:00.62]nothing can go faster than a good man on skis.'
[02:06.10]'We don't know,'Amundsen said.
[02:09.95]'You're the best skier in Norway,
[02:12.60]but you get tired,and dogs get tired,too.
[02:17.74]Motor sledges don't get tired.
[02:21.29]They can go all day and all night.'
[02:25.46]Johansen laughed angrily.
[02:28.31]'That's stupid,'he said.
[02:31.51]'Perhaps the motor sledges can go all night,
[02:34.97]but the Englishmen can't.
[02:38.46]The English can't win,Roald-
[02:42.36]they don't understand snow,but we do.
[02:47.62]And they're too slow.'
[02:51.17]'Perhaps,'Amundsen said.
[02:54.11]'But I want to win this race.
[02:57.21]So we're going to start early!
[03:01.01]Do you understand?'
[03:03.71]It was quiet and warm inside Framheim.
[03:08.05]Bjaaland looked at Amundsen,
[03:11.18]and thought about the long,
[03:13.06]cold journey in front of him.
[03:16.72]He thought about the dogs in their holes under the snow,
[03:21.37]and listened to the wind over the house.
[03:25.52]'When,Roald?'he said quietly.
[03:31.36]'On August 24th.
[03:33.95]The sun comes back on that day.
[03:37.29]We start then.'
[03:40.67]'But we can't!'Johansen said.
[03:44.66]He looked angry,and unhappy.
[03:47.85]'That's too early!
[03:50.44]We can't start then-it's dangerous and stupid!'
[03:57.38]Amundsen looked at Johansen coldly.
[04:01.27]'You're wrong,Johansen,'
[04:03.71]he said.'We want to win,remember?
[04:08.56]So we start on August 24th.'
[04:13.32]Bjaaland listened to the winter wind outside.
[04:20.11]In Scott's camp,at Cape Evans,
[04:23.97]no one talked about Amundsen and no one worked hard.
[04:30.49]They had good food,
[04:32.17]and they played football on the snow.
[04:36.45]They wrote a newspaper-
[04:38.44]The south Polar Times-and read books.
[04:43.66]No one learnt to ski,no one worked on the motor sledges.
[04:49.47]Twice,men went for long journeys across the snow.
[04:54.47]They walked, and pulled the sledges themselves.
[04:58.88]Oates stayed at Cape Evans and looked after his ponies.
[05:04.46]Over the window in Cape Evans,
[05:08.21]Scott put a map of Antarctica.
[05:12.18]With a pen,he made a line from Cape Evans to the South Pole,
[05:18.42]and he put a little Britisn Flag at the Pole.
[05:23.32]Under the map,Scott wrote the day for the start of their journey.
[05:30.18]We start on November 3rd,he wrote.
