[00:00.00]During my childhood, Memorial Day was more commonly known as "Decoration Day". [00:07.94]That is because the emphasis was on decorating graves of our loved ones. [00:13.73]I have fond memories of loading buckets full of beautiful flowers, [00:18.57]as well as loaded picnic basket into my grandparents' car [00:23.11]and then driving with them to southern Illinois, [00:27.39]where all of the relatives on my father's side of the family are buried. [00:31.81]Soon after we arrived at the tiny town of St. Elmo, [00:35.80]we headed for the graveyard and put the flowers on the graves of many relatives, [00:41.56]including several great grandfathers who had fought in the Civil War. [00:46.44]In fact, the holiday was established in 1869, following the Civil War.
